This isn’t an all new binding rather it’s an evolution of the previous generation Explore. The most important change is they’ve altered the position of the main pivot, no longer is it directly under your toe, which wasn’t ideal for stride ergonomics and did result in a slightly clumsy feeling whilst skinning. It’s now 23mm behind the toe of the boot, which makes for a much easier more natural feeling stride. The toe of the binding is also moveable so if you fall forward whilst in touring mode you are less likely to rip the binding off the ski as the toe will allow enough movement to insure your knee will hit the top of the ski first. (It’s clearer when you see it…) The excellent heel unit works as before and the stack height remains very similar (39mm). They’ve increased the width of the binding by 10mm to improve stability and make the binding work better with wide skis and powerful boots. Fritschi have created a binding that combines superb ski performance (and safety) with improved touring ability. Word from those that have used it is it really shows a marked improvement whilst ascending compared to the Explore. (Comes with 80mm brake as standard and an option of 86mm Axion crampon £47)
