Description

Season : AW 19

Code : 003830

Weight : 0KG

The light weight, the easy step-in and the practical operation make the Xenic 10 an exceptionally agile binding for ski tours in any terrain. When skiing downhill, length compensation of 10 mm ensures a reliable release according to the settings. The innovative frontal unit provides a secure hold in front and with the exceptionally broad heel support in the back the skis are easy to control. The optimal mix of light high-tech plastics of the latest generation and high-quality metals results in superior stability at a weight of only 280 g per unit.

Please note, whilst the picture shows a brake, this is available at an extra cost of £46.

    Buyers Guide

Tested by Lee Hardy, Fall Line Magazine Tester and Braemar Staff member.

I was like a child at Christmas when I got a parcel through the post in February of 2019. The guys at Fritschi UK had sent me the eagerly awaited Xenic 10 binding to test. At first glance it is unmistakably Fritschi and whilst at 280 grams (355 grams with brakes and screws on my scales) it feels a solid piece of kit. The toe engages in a different way to conventional pin bindings. So how does it all work? When in the open position, the pin levers are under tension waiting for the toe of your boot. With a fixed stop and a positioning guide, even the slightest pressure on the broad step in pedal activates the pins which shift horizontally inwards, quickly and precisely engaging in the inserts of your boots. It really is that easy! Then raising the lever into walk mode this LOCKS the toe, unlike the Vipec/Tecton,  and whilst it does not have the Din release of these bindings, I can say after a bit of a tumble it releases easily and smoothly. The heel is equally as user friendly. When stepping in ski mode there is a satisfying clunk as the pins open and engage in the heel of the boot. With 10mm of length compensation in the heel the pressure remains constant even when the ski is flexed ensuring a defined DIN release.

Transmission of power from boot to ski edge is up there with best in class for pin tech due to the large diameter of the “core tower”. This is the pivot at the heel allowing it to be spun from ski to walk mode. Being significantly wider this transmits power more directly to the ski’s edge.

Unlike other models in their range the Xenic only has one climbing bar. I did not find this a problem as the reduction in weight and consequently a lighter action underfoot meant I never felt the need to use it.

I loved this binding. Step in is so easy you could do it blindfolded. OK you won’t drive the heel of the ski as hard as you could with a Tecton, but then this is not designed for that purpose. Having said that it still feels solid in the heel with great power transmission and drive.

    Verdict

OK so some other manufacturers are maybe prettier! But at £300 this is a pin bargain.
