How to choose the right Rucksack

How to choose the right Rucksack

Determine capacity and size
  • Activity:Consider your primary use. A smaller pack (15-30L) is good for commuting or day hikes, while a larger pack (40-65L+) is better for multi-day trips or carrying more gear.
  • Avoid over-packing:Choose a size that fits your needs, but be aware that a larger pack may encourage you to fill it with unnecessary items.
Prioritize fit and comfort
  • Torso length:The most crucial factor for comfort. Adjustable torso length is ideal, especially for larger packs.
  • Hip belt:The majority of the weight should rest on your hips. Look for an ergonomically shaped hip belt that is comfortable and fits snugly.
  • Straps:Make sure the shoulder, sternum, and hip straps are adjustable to fine-tune the fit for your body.
  • Ventilation:A well-ventilated back panel or back system helps prevent excessive sweating.

Evaluate material and features
  • Material:Look for lightweight yet durable materials. Water-resistant or waterproof materials are beneficial, but you should still use a rain cover or waterproof liner for added protection.
  • Durability:Check the abrasion resistance, especially on the base of the pack, and ensure the stitching is strong.
  • Organization:Consider how you need to organize your gear. Pockets, compartments, and attachment points for gear like trekking poles can be very useful.
  • Access:Some packs have convenient access points like a front or side zipper, which can be helpful for reaching items without unpacking everything.

Test the rucksack before buying

This is probably the most important bit of advice. Much like boots, its best to come into store and try it on with some weight in the pack to get a feel of how it fits.
